Key stage 2
Face to face course
90 minutes
Physical computing involves using digital devices to sense and interact with the world – an engaging alternative to screen-only activity. Physical
computing touches upon many areas of the computing curriculum. Data loggers are digital devices which can record and store data over time.
Data loggers can store a range of information about the environment around them, such as temperature, light levels or sound.
During this CPD, you’ll explore how data loggers can be used in the classroom to support the teaching of the KS2 computing curriculum. You’ll
find out how the data loggers and their related software work, gain hands-on experience of using them to collect a range of data and how to use
them with pupils to collect, analyse, evaluate and present a range of data.
The National Centre for Computing Education has developed a data logger physical computing kit that can be borrowed from your local
Computing Hub, following your CPD.
Who is it for?
This course is aimed at classroom teachers and subject leaders of computing, looking to develop their use of digital devices as part of their
computing curriculum.
How long is this course?
This course consists of one 90 minute session.
How will you learn?
Hands-on experiential learning with the collaborative support of your peers, led by an experienced Professional Development Leader. The
course will model teaching approaches that can be taken back to the classroom.
Outcomes
By the end of this course you will be able to:
- Understand how data loggers can be used to collect, analyse, evaluate, and present data and information
- Gain hands-on experience and confidence using data loggers
- Deliver a Teach Computing Curriculum unit using data loggers
This course is part of Teach primary computing
